General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a three-year diploma programme that builds a strong clinical foundation for a career in nursing. It combines classroom learning with substantial hands-on hospital training, preparing students to work confidently across medical-surgical, community, mental health, child health and midwifery settings. Objectives of GNM Programme
The students on completion of this course will be able to:

Demonstrate competency in providing health care to individuals, sick or well, using the nursing process.
- Assess the nursing needs of clients from birth to death.
- Plan and carry out appropriate action to meet nursing needs.
- Provide effective nursing care to maintain the best possible level of health in all aspects.

Eligibility Criteria for GNM Nursing Programme
Age
- Minimum 17 years of age as on 31st December of that year
- Upper age limit: 35 years (no age bar for ANM / LHV)
Educational Qualification
- 10+2 with English, minimum 40% at the qualifying exam and in English individually, from any recognised board (Science preferable)
- State Open School / NIOS candidates are also eligible
- 10+2 with English and 40% in a vocational ANM course from an INC-recognised school
- 10+2 with English and 40% in Vocational Stream–Health Care Science from a recognised CBSE/State/Centre board
- Registered ANM with pass marks
Foreign Nationals
- Entry qualification equivalency (12th standard) is obtained through the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi
- The institution and State Nursing Council ensure the qualification is equivalent to the criteria above
Candidates must be medically fit, and admissions take place once a year. Reservation is applicable only within the number of seats sanctioned by INC, not above it.
Reservation Policy
- For disabled candidates: 3% reservation for locomotor disability of 40% to 50% of the lower extremity, with age and qualification criteria otherwise unchanged. A committee comprising a medical officer authorised by the state medical board and a nursing expert determines eligibility.
- 5% relaxation on total marks is given for SC/ST candidates.
- Any other reservation is applied as per State Government policy.

Commencement of the Course
The course is scheduled to commence as per the policies of the Department of Health & Family Welfare (Govt. of West Bengal), West Bengal University of Health Sciences, West Bengal Nursing Council, and Indian Nursing Council. Classes are expected to begin in the month of August.

- Admission fees are Rs. 10,000/- per year. Tuition fees are Rs. 1,52,000/- per year. Development fees of Rs. 10,000/- are payable one time during first admission.
- For hostellers, accommodation and fooding charges are Rs. 48,000/- per year (Rs. 4,000/- per month x 12).
- Transport fees are Rs. 10,000/- per year.
- Hostel accommodation is not compulsory for non-hostellers.
- No other hidden cost is applicable.
Cancellation of Admission
The Institute reserves the right to cancel a student's admission during the session, if the Principal finds the student guilty of:
- Suppression of information
- Supply of false information
- General misconduct unbecoming of a student
- Adoption of unfair means at the examination
- General indiscipline
Examination of the Course
The final examination is conducted after completion of the course curriculum, following guidelines prescribed from time to time by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and West Bengal Nursing Council. GNM examinations are conducted by WBNC; B.Sc. Nursing examinations are conducted by WBUHS.
- One regular examination is held each year, followed by a supplementary examination.
- A candidate who fails can be promoted to the next year.
- A candidate may take any number of attempts, within a maximum period of 6 years; all previous papers must be cleared before appearing in the final examination.
- No institution may submit an average internal mark higher than 75% across its admitted students for a course.
- Minimum pass marks: 50% in each theory and practical paper separately.
- Minimum pass marks for English: 40%.
- Theory and Practical exams for Introduction to Computer are conducted as a school exam, with marks sent to the SNRC/Board for inclusion in the marksheet.
- Theory and practical must be passed separately in each paper; failing either requires re-appearing for both.
- Practical examinations are capped at a maximum of 20 candidates per day, and must be held in the respective clinical areas, jointly conducted by one internal and one external examiner per student.

Examinations are graded on the aggregate marks across the entire three-year training programme:
Stipend
A stipend of ₹4,000 per month is provided during the 6-month internship period for all students (excluding in-service students).
