Aims
The aims of the undergraduate program are to:
- Produce knowledgeable, competent nurses and midwives with clear critical thinking skills who are caring, motivated, assertive and well-disciplined, responding to the changing needs of the profession, the healthcare delivery system and society.
- Prepare them to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare services in any healthcare setting.
- Prepare nurses and midwives who can make independent decisions in nursing situations within the scope of practice, protect the rights of individuals and groups, and conduct research in the areas of nursing practice, applying evidence-based practice.
- Prepare them to assume the role of practitioner, teacher, supervisor and manager in all healthcare settings.
Objectives
On completion of the B.Sc. Nursing program, graduates will be able to:
- Utilize critical thinking to synthesize knowledge derived from physical, biological and behavioural sciences, and the humanities, in the practice of professional nursing and midwifery.
- Practice professional nursing and midwifery competently and safely in diverse settings, utilizing caring, critical thinking and therapeutic nursing interventions with individuals, families, populations and communities at any developmental stage and with varied lived health experiences.
- Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with national health policies and programs.
- Integrate professional caring into practice decisions that encompass the values, ethical, moral and legal aspects of nursing.
- Respect the dignity, worth and uniqueness of self and others.
- Apply concepts of leadership, autonomy and management to the practice of nursing and midwifery to enhance quality and safety in health care.
Eligibility Criteria for B.Sc. Nursing Programme
Age
- Minimum 17 years of age on 31st December of the year admission is sought
Educational Qualification
- Passed 12th Standard (10+2) Science with minimum 45% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology combined, and a pass in English individually
- Candidates from State Open School / NIOS with Science and English are also eligible
- English is compulsory at 10+2 level
Entrance Exam
- Candidates must appear for the CET conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (wbjeeb.nic.in)
- Admission is done through Central Counselling as per government order
Colour blind candidates are eligible provided colour-corrective contact lenses or spectacles are worn. Candidates must be medically fit, and married candidates are also eligible. Students are admitted once a year, based strictly on entrance examination merit, and submission of a residential certificate is mandatory.
Reservation Policy
Reservation of seats for SC / ST / OBC / EWS / PH categories follows the policy prescribed by the applicable Central or State Government:
- Admission under the reserved quota is subject to the reservation policy and eligibility criteria prescribed for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates.
- For SC/ST/OBC candidates, the minimum marks required in the three core subjects is 40%, instead of 45% for General category candidates.

Commencement of the Course
The course is scheduled to commence as per the policies of the Department of Health & Family Welfare (Govt. of West Bengal), West Bengal University of Health Sciences, West Bengal Nursing Council, and Indian Nursing Council. Classes are expected to begin in the month of August.

- Admission fees are Rs. 10,000/- per year. Tuition fees are Rs. 1,52,000/- per year. Development fees of Rs. 10,000/- are payable one time during first admission.
- For hostellers, accommodation and fooding charges are Rs. 48,000/- per year (Rs. 4,000/- per month x 12).
- Transport fees for hostellers are Rs. 10,000/- per year.
- Hostel accommodation is not compulsory for non-hostellers.
- No other hidden cost is applicable.
Cancellation of Admission
The Institute reserves the right to cancel a student's admission during the session, if the Principal finds the student guilty of:
- Suppression of information
- Supply of false information
- General misconduct unbecoming of a student
- Adoption of unfair means at the examination
- General indiscipline
Examination of the Course
The final examination is conducted after completion of the course curriculum, following guidelines prescribed from time to time by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and West Bengal Nursing Council. B.Sc. Nursing examinations are conducted by WBUHS; GNM examinations are conducted by WBNC.
- Applied Anatomy and Applied Physiology: Section A (Anatomy) 37 marks, Section B (Physiology) 38 marks.
- Applied Sociology and Applied Psychology: Section A (Sociology) 37 marks, Section B (Psychology) 38 marks.
- Applied Microbiology and Infection Control: Section A (Microbiology) 37 marks, Section B (Infection Control) 38 marks.
- Applied Nutrition and Dietetics and Applied Biochemistry: Section A (Nutrition & Dietetics) 50 marks, Section B (Biochemistry) 25 marks.
- Pharmacology, Genetics and Pathology: Pharmacology 38 marks, Pathology 25 marks, Genetics 12 marks.
- Nursing Research and Statistics: Research 55 marks, Statistics 20 marks.
- Minimum 80% attendance is required in theory and practical for each subject to be eligible to sit the exam, and 100% attendance in each practical area before the degree is awarded.
- College-conducted subjects (Communicative English, Health/Nursing Informatics & Technology, Professionalism & Ethics, Forensic Nursing & Indian Laws) require a minimum pass of 50% (C Grade), sent to the University for inclusion in the marksheet.
- Minimum pass marks: 40% (P Grade) for English and elective modules; 50% for each theory and practical paper otherwise, and 50% (C Grade) for mandatory modules.
- Theory and practical must be passed separately in each paper; failing either requires re-appearing for both.
- A grace of up to 5 marks may be added to one subject's theory marks if it is the only subject failed in a semester and the addition results in a pass.
- Candidates must clear all previous examinations before appearing for the 5th and 7th semester examinations, though they may attend consecutive semesters in the meantime.
Stipend
A stipend of ₹4,000 per month is provided during the 6-month internship period for all students (excluding in-service students).
